Once upon a time there was a lumberjack, working hard in the forest and selling firewood for some food. While he was cutting down a tree, his ax accidentally fell into the river. The river was very deep and flowing very fast - he lost his ax and could not find it again. He sat by the river & began to cry.

While he was weeping, the river god got up and asked him, "What happened?" The lumberjack told him the story. The river god found his ax and offered to help him. He disappeared into the river and pulled out a golden ax, but the lumberjack said it was not his. He disappeared again and returned with a silver ax, but the lumberjack said it was not his. God disappeared into the water again and came back with an iron ax - the woodcutter smiled and said it belonged to him. God was impressed by the honesty of the woodcutter and gave him both gold and silver axes.

The moral lesson of the story:

Honesty is the best policy.

ایک دفعہ ایک لکڑی کاٹنے والا تھا، جنگل میں محنت مزدوری کر کے کچھ کھانے کے لیے لکڑیاں بیچتا تھا۔ جب وہ درخت کاٹ رہا تھا تو غلطی سے اس کی کلہاڑی دریا میں گر گئی۔ دریا بہت گہرا تھا اور بہت تیزی سے بہہ رہا تھا – وہ اپنی کلہاڑی کھو بیٹھا اور اسے دوبارہ نہیں مل سکا۔ وہ دریا کے کنارے بیٹھ کر رونے لگا۔

جب وہ رو رہا تھا تو دریا کا خدا اُٹھا اور اس سے پوچھا کہ کیا ہوا؟ لکڑہارے نے اسے کہانی سنائی۔ دریا کے خدا نے اپنی کلہاڑی ڈھونڈ کر اس کی مدد کرنے کی پیشکش کی۔ وہ دریا میں غائب ہو گیا اور ایک سنہری کلہاڑی نکال لی، لیکن لکڑہارے نے کہا کہ یہ اس کی نہیں ہے۔ وہ پھر غائب ہو گیا اور چاندی کی کلہاڑی لے کر واپس آیا، لیکن لکڑہارے نے کہا کہ یہ اس کا بھی نہیں تھا۔ خدا دوبارہ پانی میں غائب ہو گیا اور لوہے کی کلہاڑی لے کر واپس آیا – لکڑہارے نے مسکرا کر کہا کہ یہ اس کا ہے۔ خدا لکڑی کاٹنے والے کی ایمانداری سے متاثر ہوا اور اسے سونے اور چاندی کے دونوں کلہاڑے تحفے میں دیئے۔
